Fly doves, fly

2024

The title of the exhibition Fly doves, fly comes from a historical warning signal among gay men in Moscow: "Летите, голуби, летите". This phrase was used to warn of police and KGB raids, as men cruised public spaces and parks in the Russian capital. Golubój or голубой in Russian is a coded word that simultaneously refers to pigeons, the color light blue and gay men.

The works in the exhibition juxtapose historical references and materials, queer codes and birds as a linguistic and coded image for, among other things, queerness. Light, colour and darkness are an integral part of the works and the exhibition as a whole.

Several of the works refer to a not too distant past where visibility did not necessarily mean safety for queer people. How do these stories affect us today, and how do they shape our view of the future?
